This paper will take detailed look at the failed revolutions of the late 19th century and reflect on how they affected Marx's theories on socialism. Special attention will be given to changes in his economic thought. In order to do justice to this topic, it is necessary to provide a brief background on socialism, marking its evolution through the centuries. Further, it is necessary to outline Marx's initial thoughts on socialism and socialist economics if any comparison is to be understood. Furthermore, a look at the social conditions that were prevalent in Europe in the late 19th century and also in the United States during the time of the Civil War must be given. This paper discusses how John Locke and Karl Marx argued very different views of property, labor and rights. Locke believed in private property rights and the state's obligation to protect them. Within this context, he extolled individual rights and the concept of the citizen's sovereignty. In his perspective, the state served the citizens and had to guarantee life, liberty and property. Marx, meanwhile, saw society through the lens of the "class struggle".
