This short paper addresses the importance of folk song to slaves in the antebellum south and the revelation of sexual exploitation under slavery in the writings of an escaped woman slave. The songs sung by slaves came from the Christian traditions of the southern white plantation culture. The underlying messages blacks conveyed singing them were likely very different than what white's intended.
